In one of my last emails, I explained that my postal service An Post did a massive price increase across all shipping rates. I updated these rates across my store and everything was fine... or so it seemed.
I have to mail orders out in either small or large envelopes depending on the size of the item. An Post charge differently for shipping depending on the size of the envelope, so I have different shipping costs depending on what envelope the item will need to be shipped in.
With the recent price increase, this led to the discovery that the shipping costs for both small and big items are being added together at the checkout. This can make the total shipping cost look way more expensive than what it should actually be. This is common in the scenario if you buy a singular A4 print and a singular button badge, for example. After lots of research and tests, this is a limitation with Shopify itself, which I cannot fix unless I pay for a 3rd party app monthly (which I can't afford to do currently).
So my solution going forward is that you may qualify for reduced shipping before ever being charged for your order. So how will this actually work? Firstly, you place your order at the checkout like normal. You won’t be charged yet, because then I will need to manually review the order myself. I will check to see if you were overcharged for shipping. If there is an overcharge, I will only authorise a charge for the total order cost minus how much the shipping cost was overcharged by. For example: a US customer may buy 1 qty of an A4 print and 1 qty of a button badge. The shipping will total to €9 at the checkout, when it should only cost €6.50. Hence, I will remove the extra €2.50 from your total order cost before I charge your payment method.
For now this is the best solution I have, and probably the most efficient. So if you ever see that your were charged less for your order, this will primarily be the reason why, unless otherwise stated.
